Abstract
Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by melanized fungi, prevalent in tropical climates. We present the case of a 73-year-old male with a 14-year history of a verrucous lesion on the left knee. The patient originated from Maynas province, Iquitos - an urban-rural area within the Amazon Lowland Rainforest ecoregion. Diagnosis was confirmed through direct microscopy, fungal culture, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, identifying Cladophialophora bantiana as the causative agent. Although this species is typically associated with cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, we report an unusual case of chromoblastomycosis subcutaneous caused by C. bantiana.
