Abstract

“Late blight of the potato” quickly devastated Irish farmlands at the beginning of 1845, resulting in famine and mass emigration from the country. The causative agent, identified as Phytophthora infestans, is a hemibiotrophic and heterotrophic oomycete of still disputed origin, and even today is responsible for major agricultural losses, despite advances made in this area.
