Abstract
I
Background: The burden of tuberculosis (TB) can be measured using disability-adjusted life years (DALY), an indicator that combines the impact of premature mortality and disability. Aim: To estimate the burden of TB in Chile for 2022 by calculating DALY and their components: years of potential life lost (YPLL) and years lived with disability (YLD). Materials and Methods: An ecological, descriptive study based on secondary data. Based on national data, mortality, incidence of new cases and relapses, and TB-related DALY were estimated (ICD-10 codes: A15-A19). Results: In 2022, 248 deaths attributable to TB were recorded in Chile; 72.6% were men. In total, 8,975 DALY were estimated, with an overall rate of 45.26/105 inhabitants (69.84/105 in men and 21.32/105 in women; rate ratio = 3.28). YPLL and YLD accounted for 88.3% and 11.7% of total DALY. Conclusion: Estimates of YPLL, YLD, and DALY revealed that the TB disease burden in men in Chile is three times higher than in women, particularly due to its greater impact on premature mortality.
